Green Space Dark Skies invites you to join thousands of people, from all paths in life, to experience beautiful landscapes across the UK at dusk, between April and September 2022. Anyone is welcome to sign up to this series of mass gatherings, which celebrate nature, our responsibility to protect it and everyone’s right to explore the countryside. Using low impact lights, we will create magical, memorable moments outdoors.
Commissioned by UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, the ground breaking UK-wide celebration of creativity in 2022, this project is led by outdoor arts experts Walk the Plank.
We are looking for thousands of Lumenators to come and experience beautiful landscapes across the UK at dusk. You can join alone, with family and friends, or with an organisation. It’s free to take part and everyone is welcome, but you do need to book your place in advance. We’re hoping to make sure that anyone who wants to can be involved.
And tell us what you think about the countryside in our citizen science project Green Space Stories. Join hundreds of others in sharing their story to build a major online archive anyone can browse.
We want you to carry a hand-held Geolight and help us to create a series of once-in-a-lifetime events outdoors. There are 20 different secret locations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland where you can join in. It’s free to take part and everyone is welcome to sign up – in fact, we want you to tell us what you need in order to be involved.
Together, we will celebrate nature, show that the countryside belongs to all of us, and that it is our job to protect it.
If you have questions about participation visit our Frequently Asked Questions here.
You can also share a few words, image or voice note about an experience that you have had in a green or blue (water) space in the UK, to help us build a snapshot of people’s relationships with nature in 2022 in Green Space Stories.
The Finale is the exciting culmination of Green Space Dark Skies’ series of 20 events across the UK, and will be broadcast in a BBC Countryfile special later this year.
If you’re interested in becoming a Lumenator you can hear from our Finale Director Mark Murphy here as he explains the creative vision behind the finale.
The Finale will take place in September at the four highest mountains in our four nations: Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland, Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon in Wales and Slieve Donard in Northern Ireland.
Green Space Dark Skies will be carbon positive, ultimately removing more carbon from the atmosphere than it produces. The aim is to leave no trace, and to empower everyone involved to make a difference locally. In the face of the climate emergency, thousands of Lumenators will become caretakers of nature for the future.
The project is rooted in the countryside, and in celebrating our landscapes. It considers them as places worth protecting, for everyone, forever.
I could write a book on all the amazing moments I had, but I think that a key to success in any such event is to ensure that you pick passionate participants.
